How often should I meet with my advisor?
- It is up to you and your advisor to determine the frequency of your communication, but don't hesitate to make contact when you have questions or concerns.
- Your registration PIN changes on a quarterly basis, so at the least you should plan to meet with your advisor on a quarterly basis for an update and planning meeting.
- At approximately the fourth week of each quarter, a reminder to schedule advising meetings is sent via the department’s student e-mail list.
- Advising appointments can be scheduled through your advisor's module at the FSST Advising site on Canvas.
When do I register?
- Quarterly registration for continuing students begins on Sunday of the beginning of the 8th week of each term.
- Priority is based upon total number of credits. (Note: Transfer credits are not counted until an official transcript has been received and processed by OSU Admissions).
- You can estimate your registration date and time at https://registrar.oregonstate.edu/osu-academic-calendar/.
- After the end of the fifth week of each quarter you can view your specific date and time, and any holds that might block you from registering, by logging into your account via Student Online Services, and checking Registration Status.
What are the expectations for advising?

- Additionally, within the College of Agricultural Sciences, advising is viewed as a partnership, in which you are paired with a knowledgeable academic professional, assigned to work with you over an extended period of time, on a one-on-one basis, to promote your success.
- Bear in mind that your education, and all decisions about your program of study, are ultimately your responsibility.
- Take the time to become familiar with the information at the FSST Undergraduate web site. You will find answers to many of your questions at this site. Use the tools at this site, the OSU Online Catalog, Registration Handbook and My Degrees to plan and monitor your program.
- Advisors are expected to be respectful of you as an individual and to provide accurate and timely information regarding your education.
- Advisees are similarly expected to respect advisors and their time, in part by preparing for, and keeping, appointments.
- In your advising meeting, express your experience and goals as completely and accurately as possible, so that your advisor can make the most appropriate recommendations to help you maximize the benefit you receive from the time, effort, and money you are investing in your education.
- Review your plan and progress with your advisor, and be prepared to act on the suggestions your advisor provides.
