Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Dr. Bob McGorrin - Named 2025 Fellow of the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD)

Dr. McGorrin becomes the first "triple Fellow" in OSU Food Science & Technology - holding fellowships in the ACS, IFT, and now AGFD.

Congratulations to Professor Emeritus Robert J. McGorrin on being named a 2025 Fellow of the Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division (AGFD) at the American Chemical Society’s Fall Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.!

This honor recognizes Dr. McGorrin’s groundbreaking work in flavor chemistry, from identifying key aroma compounds in dairy and cereal foods to advancing understanding of how processing and packaging impact flavor. His prolific research has shaped the field through impactful publications, ACS books, and the organization of ten international symposia on flavor chemistry. We celebrate this extraordinary achievement and his lasting impact on the science of food and flavor.

Dr. James Osborne has been Appointed as the Board President of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture (ASEV)

Renowned wine microbiologist and Director of the Oregon Wine Research Institute, Dr. James Osborne, has been named the Board President of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture. This national leadership role brings recognition to Oregon State University, the Oregon Wine Research Institute (OWRI), and the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST).

Dr. Jovana Kovaceviv Recipient of the 2025 Savery Outstanding Young Faculty Award

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jovana Kovacevic, 2025 recipient of the Savery Outstanding Young Faculty Award from the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University. This award recognizes early-career faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, and Extension or international engagement. Since joining the Food Innovation Center (FIC) in 2016, Dr. Kovacevic has built OSU’s food safety research and Extension program from the ground up. She established state-of-the-art Biosafety Level-1 and Level-2 labs and launched a nationally recognized research program focused on preventing and controlling Listeria contamination in the food industry. To date, she has authored 32 peer-reviewed publications, advised nine master’s students, and presented her work at numerous national and international conferences. Her Extension and outreach efforts have earned strong support from industry stakeholders and made lasting contributions to food safety education and practice. Dr. Kovacevic stands out for her ability to connect cutting-edge research with real-world application—delivering science-based solutions to food producers while also mentoring future leaders in food safety. This award recognizes the depth of her impact and the important contributions she continues to make at FIC, FST, and OSU.

Jeff Clawson Recipient of OSU's 2024 Exemplary Employee Award

Join the department in congratulating Brewery Pilot Plant Manager, Jeff Clawson, in being the recipient of OSU’s 2024 Exemplary Employee Award. Department Head, Dr. Lisbeth Goddik said it perfectly when congratulating Jeff, “I believe we all recognize why Jeff is the perfect recipient of this award. He goes above and beyond in all aspects of his work. He has participated in elevating the OSU Brewing Program and has helped advance the local and national brewing industry. He supports research, teaching, and outreach programs. He puts on the most important FST events, key among them, the Bean Blow Out. His work on the Community Committee makes FST a better place for all of us.” Thank you for all that you do, Jeff, and congratulations on this well-deserved award.

 
Ron Samia awarded Best Oral Presentation at the 9th European Brewing Convention Congress in 2024

Congratulations to Ph.D. Candidate, Ron Samia, for being awarded Best Oral Presentation at the 9th European Brewing Convention Congress in Lille, France. This is a huge accomplishment for Ron, Dr. Tom Shellhammers' lab, the Department of Food Science & Technology, and OSU.

Lindsay Garcia Receives Rockey Future Leaders for Food & Agriculture (FFAR) Fellow Award in 2023

Food Science Ph.D. candidate Lindsay Garcia has received the prestigious Rockey Future Leaders for Food & Agriculture (FFAR) Fellow award. Lindsay joins a cohort of 28 diverse and talented scholars from across the US and Canada for this 3-year professional development opportunity. Congratulations Lindsay!

 

Dr. Neil Shay

One of two Oregon State University researchers elected 2021 American Society for Nutrition Foundation Fellow

Dr. Neil Shay, professor of food science and technology, studies the nutritional regulation of gene transcription with a focus on the impact of plant-produced chemicals on nuclear hormone receptors and other regulatory proteins. He has used cell and animal models and has helped supervise human clinical trials as well. 

Most recently, Shay’s research has focused on understanding how specific food components – for example, polyphenols from fruits such as red raspberries, cherries and grapes, and omega-three fats from walnuts – can contribute to good health and improved metabolic function.

Dr. Christina DeWitt

Elected 2021 Institute of Food Technologists Fellow

Dr. Christina DeWitt is recognized by the Institute of Food Technologists for her innovative research, contributions to new academic and career programs, collaboration in a key role with nine team partnerships among academia/industry/agency, as a co-editor in chief of a peer-reviewed aquatic food journal, and by providing leadership and outreach to 10 countries.

Dr. Lisbeth Goddik

Elected 2021 Institute of Food Technologists Fellow

Dr. Lisbeth Goddik is recognized by her contributions in sustainable food systems in dairy research, overseeing transformative changes in the Food Science and Technology curriculum, her contributions to research and outreach programs in sustainable food manufacturing, and her active role in communicating the science of food to the public. Dr. Goddik holds two endowed professorships sponsored by stakeholders.

This award recognizes outstanding and exceptional service by classified employees and professional faculty within the College of Agricultural Sciences at Oregon State University.

Dr. Jovana Kovacevic

This award recognizes outstanding scholarly activity and significant intellectual work, validated and communicated through published articles, innovative engagement and multiple grants with national impact.

Dr. Si Hong Park
Recipient of the IAFP Larry Beuchat Young Researcher Award

Sponsored by bioMerieux, this award is presented to a young researcher who has demonstrated outstanding ability and professional promise in the early years of their career.

Dr. Park’s research emphasizes food and human microbiome supplemented with food additives (prebiotics/probiotics) to understand the interaction between the host and microbes related to the food safety and quality using metagenomics and bioinformatics approaches. (Read more...)

Dr. Yanyun Zhao
Recipient of the 2020 National IFT Research and Development Award

Dr. Yanyun Zhao is recognized for her contributions to advance the science and technology of edible coating for reducing food waste, promoting sustainability, and producing healthy consumer foods.

Recipient of the 2020 OSU Impact Award for Outstanding Scholarship

This award recognizes OSU faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship in a specific project or activity resulting in substantial impact beyond the university setting. Yanyun’s work in edible coatings, biodegradable packaging, and co-product innovation have had real industry impact. It’s a great illustration of the power of applied research.

Recipient of the 2020 OSU Postdoctoral Mentoring Award

This award recognizes and encourages outstanding mentoring of postdoctoral appointees by OSU faculty members. Yanyun has worked diligently for years to improve conditions for post-docs at OSU. In addition, she has personally mentored 12 postdocs.
