Post Baccalaureate Study in Food Science & Technology

Food Science and Technology welcomes post baccalaureate students

Thinking about kick-starting a new career in brewing, winemaking, or distilling?

Food Science and Technology is the place for you!

Why a Post Baccalaureate Degree?

Some post baccalaureate students choose to take a limited number of classes in targeted areas in order to acquire additional professional skills that will help enhance or redirect their careers.

Others, particularly students whose first major was not in a related science discipline, complete a subsequent Bachelor of Science Degree in this major.

Completing required foundation science courses and the subsequent food science curriculum typically requires 2-3 years of full time study, depending on previous background.

A small number of students have used post-baccalaureate study in FST to prepare to successfully compete for admission to the Oregon State, or another university’s graduate program.

As a group, our post baccalaureate students have performed at a high academic level and have enjoyed excellent post-program employment outcomes.

Admission Application Deadlines Earning the Degree Registration Advising FAQs - Post Baccalaureate Admission

Admission

Students holding a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution who are otherwise admissible to Oregon State University will accepted into the Food Science and Technology program.

See OSU Office of Admissions - Post Baccalaureate

Application Deadlines

To ensure the academic success post-baccalaureate students should plan to submit completed applications, including transcripts showing completion of all required coursework, by the following dates:

Summer quarter: May 1
Fall quarter: August 1
Winter quarter: November 1
Spring quarter: February 1

When a post-baccalaureate application file is complete (all required transcripts have been received and reviewed by the Office of Admissions) a Departmental Action Form (DAF) is sent to the FST Department.

The Departmental Action Form must be received at least three weeks prior to the first day of classes for which the student has requested admission.

Departmental Action Forms received after these dates will be considered for admission for the next available term. In addition, all prerequisite (foundation) coursework must be completed by this date.

Earning the Degree

To earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science and Technology, post baccalaureate students must fulfill all of the FST major requirements of one of three Degree Options

The Baccalaureate Core (general studies) component of an OSU Bachelor’s Degree is considered fulfilled by your first degree.

Additionally, the university requires that a minimum of 45 credits applied to this degree (32 if the first degree is from OSU) must be completed with Oregon State University coursework completed while enrolled in this degree program.

Registration

Registration PINs are provided following the initial planning meeting with an FST advisor.

Incoming students register following continuing students.

  • For fall quarter the earliest registration eligibility occurs on the first transfer START Orientation date. START: Welcome New Students
  • For winter and spring quarters, registration eligibility for new students begins following priority registration for continuing students.
    Priority Registration

Registration priority for continuing students is determined by the number of credit hours on their record, with the exception of post-baccalaureate students.

  • Post-baccalaureate students register after students with senior level (135) credit, and before the juniors.

Attendance during summer term(s) may be necessary to complete all program requirements.

  • A number of classes, particularly science courses and laboratories sections of some upper division science courses, fill to capacity early in registration so post baccalaureate students cannot be guaranteed enrollment in all desired courses during fall, winter and spring quarters.
  • Summer is often the best quarter to begin, as summer quarter registration opens at the same time for all students.

Advising

Your FST academic advisor will assist in the development and monitoring of your unique program of study, and can make recommendations for additional coursework that can be completed at another institution if some time will elapse between admission and beginning of study at OSU.

Incoming post baccalaureate students should first complete a departmental orientation session with Academic Program Coordinator Deborah Gould.

Once the orientation session is completed and notification of admission is received, post baccalaureate students may contact the FST Advising Team to begin their individual program planning process.

Quarterly advising meetings are strongly recommended throughout a student’s progression through the program.

FAQs - Post Baccalaureate Admission

How do I know if my courses are equivalent to those required by FST?
Have you taken or plan to take foundation science and math courses at another college prior to coming to OSU?

The determination of equivalency of your courses will be guided by existing articulation agreements, and past transfer equivalency determinations.

  • See the Articulation Agreement between OSU and other colleges and universities in the state, for courses completed at a college or university in Oregon.
  • If the course is completed at an institution outside of Oregon, see OSU Transfer Course Search
  • If your course is not included in the equivalency table, or does not articulate to a specific OSU course number, the course will be found acceptable if it is in a “track” appropriate for a major in the department offering the course at a public four year institution in the state where the course was completed.
  • FST may require submission of a course description and/or syllabus to assist with the equivalency determination.
  • Most foundation courses must be passed with a C- or better in order to progress.
    FST Grading Policy
  • See all of the prerequisites for each FST course here: FST Degree Requirements and Prerequisites

If you have questions about a transfer course, contact FST Academic Program Coordinator, Deborah Gould.

I earned advanced placement, CLEP or other advanced credit for some of the above courses? Does that count?

Based upon my high school background/placement exam, I was not required to do introductory level math courses like College Algebra (MTH111) and Elementary Functions (MTH112)?

  • If you placed into that level, Calculus alone will meet admission requirements.
  • You must have college credit for Calculus, via course completion or some form of advanced placement.

Is there any other means of taking Food Science courses at OSU?

  • Non-Degree Seeking Students are permitted to enroll in some OSU courses, including a number of Food Science and Technology courses, provided that they meet the prerequisites.
  • Since non-degree seeking students register AFTER degree seeking students fall, winter and spring quarters, they are cautioned that courses taught in these quarters may reach capacity before they can register.
  • Some of the courses likely to fill are those that comprise FST post-baccalaureate admission requirements.
